Infinity (W)AR: Truman Nominees for Battle of the Books
My students need a classroom copy of the twelve 2018-2019 Missouri Association of School Librarian's Truman Award Final Nominees for both Accelerated Reader quizzes and Battle of the Books 2019.
Coming from a small, rural community, my students make the most of their four-day school weeks with class periods that give us ample time to go in-depth with class projects and activities. Our country locale doesn't have great Internet access or the latest devices for use, but the students know that they are receiving an education that will make them career and college ready.
My students know that hard work yields big rewards.
With new teachers, revised school-wide rules, access to Accelerated Reader, and a new set of Missouri Learning Standards, these students are prepared to get the most out of their time here at our school!
My Project
The final nominees for Missouri Association of School Librarians 2018-2019 Truman Readers Award are voted upon by students in March of 2019 with the recipients of the awards announced at the 2019 MASL Spring Conference. The Truman Readers Award encourages students in the early teen years to express their unique voice through exploring new literary genres, communicating with their peers about young adult literature, and honoring authors writing for young teens.
The positive effect of having these varied books in the classroom and ready to be read will be tremendous!
Not only will students be able to read these books and take quizzes on them through the school's Accelerated Reading (AR) program, but having a wide selection of books for young adults to experience will increase their capacity for empathy, expose them to new vocabulary, and give them high quality resources to improve their reading skills.
At the start of 2019, students who have read these specific books are eligible to represent their school in the Battle of the Books, a trivia competition based on the twelve Truman nominees. Having a complete set will enable passionate readers the chance to read all of these high-quality novels and compete against other students from across the state.
Please note that I have also included a copy of Allegiant by Veronica Roth in this donation request. It is not a Truman Award nominee, but an extra book was required to meet the Donor's Choose minimum check-out amount. It will complete my classroom copy of the Divergent trilogy and be available for student use in the same way the other twelve books will be.
