Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are from a low-income, high poverty area. All students are on a free lunch plan. I want to give them the library of their dreams. One where they can explore coding, and grow as individuals. Many of our students do not see the value in an education, we are trying to change that.

I believe that part of creating a love of learning is helping students find something they are passionate about.

I hope to provide them with many different centers in library that allow them to explore their potential and reach their maximum potential. I want students to see that libraries are powerful things, they hold much more than books! I want to instill in my students that libraries are a place to grow, to explore, and to revere. My students are sweet and thoughtful, some are voracious readers, some are talented artists, and others have so much hidden potential. I hope to create the perfect library to foster the development of their unique skill sets.

My Project

The Arkansas state standards for librarians are changing, and with them, the way library classes are taught. So much freedom is being gained with the new standards and the items in this project will enable my students to be exposed to and participate in STEM/STEAM projects. These materials will help my students develop creativity, teamwork skills, and critical thinking skills.

For example, one of the new lessons I am excited to teach deals with the following problem: If you were stuck on a stranded island, what would you construct to make life easier?

Students will be encouraged to draw and then make their invention. It can be something already made or even a new creation! Students will be encouraged to harness the abilities of their team members and learn from them.
