This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach high school students at a public school that believes that students come first. These students are from the surrounding neighborhood. My students enjoy my classes and look forward to coming to school. However, because of this pandemic, our students have been forced to learn at home. For now, this school year students will be 100% virtual.
Learning at home away from friends and teachers is frustrating and isolating for students, but my goal is to make this time both meaningful and engaging.
This is our new educational world for now and I need my students to feel comfortable and have as much support as I can provide through a computer screen. The culture my students have built fosters one of learning and seeking more knowledge. I want my students to be as prepared for high school and eventually college as they can be.
My Project
My students created a reading wish list for the holidays. It's a list of books they have not or would not purchase but are interested in reading based on conversations we have had in class. My goal is to gift each student a copy of the novel that is on their wish list and give them an opportunity to create a digital book presentation after they have finished novel for class. The book presentation would require them to analyze English skills that we review like: plot, characterization, theme, central idea, irony and many more. Our class discussions have sparked an interest in my students to read more diverse titles.
