My students need indoor recess items to entertain them when we can not go outside. Many of my students have special sensory and medical needs that prohibit them from going outside in extreme weather.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
There are 13 students in my Functional Skills classroom. Many of my students are on the autism spectrum, some have multiple disabilities, and some with specific disabilities that require them to need specialized services not found in a typical classroom. However, regardless of any disabilities they may have, they are all unique and possess their own unique strengths.
Teaching a special education class has it's challenges.
Many of my students have very limited verbal abilities. Some require assistive technology to communicate. I have one student that has both hearing and vision impairments and has minimal communication skills. He uses a yes/no buzzer to communicate, but he loves music and being with his friends. Some of my students are receiving grade level instruction from a general education teacher, but their social and behavioral skills require them to have a paraprofessional support them in that setting.
My staff consist of 2 full-time paraprofessional, or teacher's aides, and 2 part-time aides. We all work together to teach, encourage, and support these amazing kiddos!
My Project
Due to the weather being either too hot or too cold, my students with special needs have indoor recess on occasion. With these items, they will be both entertained and engaged. The toys picked will give them increased opportunities for group play. Playing with others will also help build their social skills.
The kitchen and food items is a great toy to teach students.
Students can learn about various food groups, where foods are stored, etc.
With the Playmobile toys, my students will be able to role play in various familiar setting and this will help them with their speech and social skill goals. Also, the Playmobile toys are the perfect size for my students' hands!
