My second graders are caring, high-spirited individuals. They love having class time to play together and are great at including everyone. Their kindergarten and first grade years were disrupted by Covid so having time to interact with classmates in creative, free-form ways is especially important.
We have Soft Start/Easy Exit several times a week where students are free to explore different toys or art supplies - most of which I brought from home and had belonged to my kids.
I would love to get a better variety of toys and ones that will appeal to both girls and boys. Currently, I have a small selection of legos which a group of 6 to 7 students crowd around. They have been so good at sharing what I brought in but more legos and other building materials would let them create much more and ensure everyone had a fair amount of supplies.
I've also am requesting more books that have female characters. Students have asked for each of these series. My library has a lot of books with male characters right now - adding these series will correct that imbalance.
We have had additional indoor recess days this year, due to extreme heat. It looks like that will be an ongoing issue. These toys will continue to engage and inspire creativity in students long after this school year.
