Indoor Play When the Weather Says Stay!

Help me give my students gross and fine motor activities for indoor recess when the weather does not allow us to go outside.

My Students

My students are adorable 2, 3, and 4-year-old special education children. My classroom contains a range of disabilities including vision, hearing loss, Downs syndrome, and autism. Most come from low-income homes and all of my students have a communication delay and special education plan. They love being at school and adore interacting with manipulative and sensory materials. We are proud to be a Delaware Star 5 star facility and provide a high quality of instruction, but funding limits our access to resources. These children are starved for hands-on activities to help them learn.

My Project

Help me provide my students with gross and fine motors activities for our gym when the weather will not allow us to play outside. We play outside every day unless it is raining or under 32 degrees. BUT we still need to play together and build our fine and gross motor skills. The trampoline, musical mat, and basketball set will allow for indoor gross motor activities. The activity cube and pound a ball toy will build fine motor skills. All of these activities allow for peer interaction and provide an opportunity for social emotional skills.

Children play to practice skills, try out possibilities, revise hypotheses and discover new challenges, leading to deeper learning.

Play allows children to communicate ideas, to understand others through social interaction, paving the way to build deeper understanding and more powerful relationships. All of my students have a communication delay as well as other special needs. My classroom has a range of disabilities: vision, hearing loss, down syndrome, and autism. These students need hands on activities to learn and provide the early interventions that make them ready for kindergarten.

With limited resources and experiences at home I love providing my students with new and engaging activities in the classroom.
