Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a low socioeconomic and often rough area of Los Angeles. Although they do not live in the best of neighborhoods, I strive to give them the best education for a brighter future.

My students are 48 energetic, inquisitive, smart 5-6 year old students from diverse backgrounds in the dual language program.

They consist of 50% English Language Learners with a Latino background and 50% "English only" students with Latino and African American backgrounds. I love that my students are diverse in their backgrounds and in their Spanish abilities. They are able to learn from each other as they begin their journey into bi-literacy and bilingualism.

My Project

Living in Los Angeles, we tend to have great weather, but on occasion our students are limited to indoor play due to rainy or hot weather. During these days, it would be great for my kindergartners to have something fun to play inside the classroom.

Classic board games are a great way for my Kindergarten students to have fun during inclement weather, but also to learn about fair play.

No recess for 5-6 year old certainly makes them squirrelly. They need to time to have fun, relax, and unwind before getting back into the demanding workload of the academic curriculum. I know they would have loads of fun moving their pawn in Chutes & Ladders or catching marbles with Hungry Hippos.

These games are not only fun, but they reinforce some of the skills taught in class, like counting, matching, and number and color recognition. In addition, students will learn important social skills, like sharing, turn taking, and fair play. They will also learn to strategize to optimize their chances of winning.

These kid friendly games will be both fun and educational!
