Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We are a Title I-funded school in a small farming town. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Fifty-three percent of our students are English learners. Although we are located in an older neighborhood, it is a tight-knit community with lots of family support.
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." - William Butler Yeats.
Our fifth-grade teacher wrote a DonorsChoose project for a small raised bed outdoor garden. I thought it would be fun to also show our students how to grow sprouts and microgreens indoors. I will introduce my students to seeds and gardening by reading A Seed Grows by Antoinette Portis. We will examine the "seed blankets" in the Hamama Kit and explain how seeds need water and sunlight to grow. In week two, we will add another method of growing microgreens; we will sprinkle seeds on clay pebbles and mist them with nutrient-enriched water. In week three, we will add sprouting to our repertoire using the Easy Sprout Sprouter. If there is still interest, we will add mason jar sprouting in week four.
Sprouts and microgreens grow pretty fast, so we should have a crop within a week or so. This will allow students to not only observe the stages of growth but also to compare and contrast the various methods of cultivating microgreens and sprouts.
This project is for microgreen and sprouting supplies to generate interest and excitement for our new outdoor garden. I also added a ream of red paper as we just ran out of red paper due to Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day.
