Help me give my students the opportunity to create a garden in their classroom. Students will work to plant and maintain the garden as well as take weekly data related to the growth of their plants.
Having a classroom with varying ability levels makes planning instruction difficult. Materials need to be available for students who are at the beginning stages of exploration, but also able to extend to the highest level of engagement for learners to be challenged.
My classroom serves eight to ten students, with special education needs.
Many of which have limited access to general education curriculum and projects especially as it relates to science and history. Students spend most of their day in my classroom with various schedules based on their grade level and specialist needs. Each has their own specific goals to work on as well as working on the age appropriate classwork. The classroom also has multiple paraeducator whose positions are for facilitating learning (i.e. small groups, one on one) and data collection.
My Project
Students will be given the opportunity to engage in practical science as they plant, maintain and study the growth of vegetables and flowers in the special education classroom. Each student will be keeping data on the growth of their garden both above the water line and below. At the end of the life cycle of the particular plant students with either harvest the food or seeds from flowers and start the process again. For many of my students this will be their first look at gardening and hopefully it will lead to more independence and responsibility.
