This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine having a seventh grade math teacher that was dedicated to making MATH PURPOSEFUL, BEAUTIFUL, and FUN! Now imagine going to school in a building that struggles to put useful, aesthetic, modern tools, and exciting projects into the hands of students. That is the experience of my scholars!

My NYC students come from low-income homes and arrive at school looking to better themselves through visualizing and accomplishing their dreams.

In developing a love of math and creativity, they are bound to succeed! It is no secret that urban air pollution is linked to compromised quality of life, health issues, and a less productive work environment. The building in which I work is located directly next to a heavily trafficked highway, exposing children continuously to particulate matter in their air. This leads to a less comfortable learning environment that exacerbates the existing health conditions of my students: asthma and otherwise poor respiratory health. We are legitimately doing our students a disservice by not actively monitoring and improving the conditions of our air quality. I plan on turning these environmental conditions into a real life learning opportunity.

My Project

According to the American Lung Association, "pediatric asthma has increased from 40.1 to 69.1, a 72.3% increase. Asthma is the sixth ranking chronic condition in our nation and the leading serious chronic illness of children in the U.S." We would like to install an air quality monitor and an air purifier in our classroom to inform students about creating environmental conditions that will improve both their academic achievement and their overall health. Students will be actively monitoring the factors that determine air quality and experiencing the BENEFITS of BREATHING CLEANER AIR. Students will be learning about how taking environmental responsibility will lead to their academic success and developing a better understanding of the characteristics of their community. We will be continuously monitoring and graphing the quantities output by the air quality monitoring device and establishing an understanding of how air quality fluctuates with season and time of day.

By contributing to this project you will be directly responsible for alleviating the environmental strain on students with respiratory conditions.

My students will be able to better concentrate and will feel more physically comfortable in a classroom where environmental factors act against their achievement. You will also be contributing to student understanding of indoor air quality, a major contributor to headaches, fatigue, and infection. This will maximize the potential of our students.
