I am a third grade teacher in an International Baccalaureate/GA Charter School serving students in grades K-5. Our students come from all walks of life, and in my classroom, I have 24 third graders, all with different learning levels and academic goals. Forty-one percent of students at our school receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many students do not have the use of technology at home.
My students need individualized learning goals.
Because we have so many different learning levels (kindergarten to sixth grade) and academic goals, I need to be able to individualize instruction in the classroom. Our county provides many software platforms for individualizing learning, but I do not have the means to rotate children through it all effectively.
I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are. Being in an IB World school, my students are constantly learning about the world around them, making inquiries and acting on those inquiries by researching to find out more. As students in the 21st century, technology is as important to their learning as the learning itself.
My Project
Technology is an important part of the 21st Century and I am requesting an iPad to help provide more individualized instruction in reading and math. My students are on all different academic levels, from below grade level to gifted (working 1-2 grade levels above). I individualize instruction as much as possible through a "Workshop Model" where students learn and work in stations. I will be using the iPad with my current limited technology to enhance learning, whether it is for math or reading skills, or providing another means for research.
The donations to this project will help provide differentiation to my students and improve their academic achievement.
My students have a state test to pass to move to the next grade. Students need to be met where they are and through the use of apps and web software, I can assign appropriate activities to move them forward. Individualizing and differentiating instruction is important to helping students grow. This iPad will be a tremendous help in providing individualized instruction while I am working with other students.
