Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of our students come from low income NYC families. They are a great group of diverse, energetic, and passionate kids. Our school's goal is to support students who historically have had an education deficit. However, there are some students who come from families with certain advantages.
As a whole, our students are a truly heterogeneous group of learners that support and love each other.
However, mixed level skills classes bring about their own challenges. As a teacher I am constantly pushed to meet varying skill level. This is one of the reasons why I have taught at this school for the past 18 years.
My Project
During this pandemic, I have learned to use many technology tools to create instruction and activities that students can access at their own pace and skill levels. However, providing this level of differentiation can be difficult in a real classroom because most of the time there is one level of instruction given to the whole class with an unreasonable expectation that every student will comprehend and finish the activity at the same time. There are always some students who either need more time and possibly more instruction, while others who finish the activity and are ready for a challenge.
There are so many amazing distance learning education tools that can be used in classroom to individualize instruction in a mixed-skill classroom.
This Fall, I plan on using these educational tools to create activities that differentiate the lesson either by providing extensions or remediation. However, I will need a number of Chromebooks for students to access to these educational tools.
