it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I never teach my pupils. I only provide the conditions in which they can learn." ~ Albert Einstein. The Team 151 Rockstars are an amazing team of students because we are always trying to support each other. We make sure that each team member has exactly what they need to be successful!
The Team 151 Rockstars are 4th and 5th grade students in a 12:1 bridge class.
We have special learning needs. Some of us have learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism or attention deficit disorders. School is not always an easy place for us. We need a smaller class so that we can stay focused. Most of us are also English Language Learners. We work with a special education teacher, an ESL teacher, an educational associate, a guidance counselor, a speech and language pathologist and an occupational therapist. We love soccer and learning about science topics. Sometimes we need our teachers to give us extra time to complete tasks or to repeat a lesson multiple times. We learn best when we incorporate all of our senses. We frequently need movement breaks to help us maintain our attention to task. Regardless, we are always striving to be independent!
My Project
In our classroom, Ms. M. helps us to create individualized resource folders for each of our subjects. Since we are each different learners, we each need different tools in order to be successful in school. Some of our needs are specific to our grade and others are specific to our IEP goals! For example, in our writing folders all students receive a transition word bank that is appropriate to their grade. We train our brains to go back to this chart whenever we are writing so that our writing is clear and our ideas are connected. However, some students also have a sound chart to help them tap out tricky words as they write. We also have mentor texts and a tricky word wall that we build ourselves all year. These folders have been crucial to our growth as writers. We also have individualized folders in math and reading. Ms. M. is also going to be helping us develop individualized resource folders in content area and in our new class -leadership development!
These resource folders help us at home and at school.
Our parents use them to help us with our homework and we learn how to be independent by adding tools on our own. These folders get a lot of wear and tear so they need to be plastic so that they last the entire year. By the end of the year we use our resource folders without prompting by our parents or Ms. M. We also find that our retention improves by using these folders. Usually by the end of the year, we are so successful that we no longer need them anymore!
