I have the wonderful opportunity of working with the best group of young people at a Title 1 school in Brooklyn, New York. Most of these students face challenging situations on a daily basis, yet they demonstrate a zeal for learning that is quite contagious. Thinking about their eager faces gives me the incentive and drive to ensure that their curiosity and desire to learn are satisfied.
Getting students to work collaboratively and remain on task present quite a challenge in a classroom with large groups of diverse learners.
As I continue to think of ways to effectively address the needs and learning styles of my fifth graders, I envision a setting that encourages the development of social and emotional skills that will produce optimal learning opportunities.
Through the ongoing support of generous donors our math lab is now equipped with stand up desks and interactive stations that facilitate more collaboration among students. My new goal for my scholars is to help them develop their ability to effectively communicate and defend their thinking by providing a setting conducive to mathematical discourse.
My Project
Getting the best results require having the correct tools!
To get my students to discuss their mathematical thinking, I need them to be in a setting that allows them to look at, and listen to each other so that they will be more inclined to participate with confidence.
These clover activity tables are just what we need to do the job!! Imagine these scholars sitting with the ability to face each other as they exchange ideas and problem solve collaboratively. If you support this project you will be helping to build a strong social / emotional learning environment that leads to greater student engagement and success.
