Individual CDs and Cassettes Needed

My students need 4 individual cassette players and 4 CD players so they may listen quietly at their seats while the rest of the students are in reading groups.

My Students

Listening to stories is one of the best ways to increase a child's fluency. I am asking for single CDs and cassette players to help with this center. I always have one child arguing about a selection for the group or playing with the volume while others are trying to listen quietly.

My children are inner city and most parents are unemployed because of the automobile crisis in our area.

All of my children qualify for free breakfast/lunch and do not have a bright future ahead of them unless some strong intervention is given. They want to learn and succeed just like other children but need more supplies than the district is able to provide. Because of the financial problems of the city, our school district is also in financial crisis. This means, again this year, there will be no spending on material that the children and teachers so desperately need. We have been very lucky to receive materials that the children greatly appreciate in the past from donors choose. These materials are making a large impact on their learning and I want them to have the best available chance for success in their future. Most have never been beyond their own neighborhood and school is the place they come to for a road out of their sadness and environment.

My Project

Not only will my children be able to access the CDs and cassettes without interruption, but I will be able to continue my guided reading groups without interruption. This has been a major problem with my children especially because of their young age and lack of responsibility of using the listening center. With this grant funded, they may also go over and pick up a story and listen when their work is finished at any time during the day. It will teach responsibility and independence to my young students. It will also help the other children to stay focused on their learning. When given a fun activity, such as a CD or cassette, they find that reading is a good experience and want to use them often. I am hoping to be able to also increase their fluency by listening to quality reading material. These children just need the technology to inspire their desire for learning. I am aware that young children love to read over and over good stories , and this is what I am asking for them.

At present, I have a beautiful supply of CDs and cassettes with books for the children to use.

This addition of individual CD players and cassette players would make my classroom run more smoothly and enhance the children's fluency. It would also teach responsibility which is lacking in so many of the young children these days. I would be able to use it in future years with many other children. At present, the cassette and earphones I have is so old that only one works and it is outdated.
