Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This November, as a class, we started to discuss what kinds of projects we wanted to focus on for Indigenous Heritage Month. Our students brainstormed ideas in groups, and this project was born. One group felt it vital to include the Indigenous groups in Alaska. Working with this group, they choose the following books: Children of the Midnight Sun, and Berry Magic, to name a few. They wanted to make sure there were both fables and historical information available. Another group wanted to educate the whole school, so they wanted to create a bulletin board. The entire class loved this idea and, as a group, started a template of what they wanted the bulletin board to look like. We put together what supplies we would need to bring their vision to life. So we are asking for some pens, paper, stickers, and border trim. The students want to help teach the rest of the school about the history of different indigenous groups. They have decided to keep this bulletin board up for a couple of months and rotate out additional information so that students can learn about others.
One of our students wanted to teach the class some Navajo String Games her shimásání ( grandmother) taught her, so she picked out two different kinds of string to peer teach this lesson to her classmates and share a piece of her history with us.
Last year we created a project that led to Murder and Missing Indigenous Girls and Women; our class would like to further our study in this area. So they have included books like If I Go Missing and The Power of Style. They have included Skin Tone People Cut Outs, representing the girls and women who go missing to help bring broader awareness to this issue.
