Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project seeks funding for sturdy bookcases to serve a dual purpose in my classroom: as storage and as physical dividers to create individual workstations for students with severe autism. These dividers will play a crucial role in minimizing distractions, increasing focus, and promoting greater independence during academic and life-skills tasks.

By using bookcases to create clearly defined, individualized spaces, students will be able to work in a calmer, more structured environment tailored to their needs.

Many of my students struggle significantly with sensory processing and attention regulation. A typical classroom environment—with open layouts and visual or auditory distractions—can be overwhelming and hinder their ability to learn. This setup supports the principles of structured teaching, which is foundational in autism education.

With fewer distractions, students will be better able to complete tasks on their own, building confidence and self-reliance.

Clearly defined physical boundaries help students understand where and how to work, reducing off-task behavior.

These stations will support specific Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals related to academic progress, independent functioning, and behavioral regulation.

My students are remarkable individuals with unique ways of learning, perceiving the world, and expressing themselves. They require highly specialized support, and while they may face significant challenges, they are capable of tremendous growth when given the right environment. Each small gain—whether it's finishing a task independently or engaging in quiet focus—is a meaningful achievement that brings them closer to greater independence. They deserve a learning space that honors their needs and gives them the best chance to thrive.
