Independent Reading - Growing My Classroom Library
My students need more reading materials for independent reading! They should be able to find stories and characters they can fall in love with, empathize with, and relate to on personal levels.
My students are diverse. Some live far more difficult lives than I can imagine, but I grew up in this school and returned to help this community. I care deeply about my students and want the best for them. They become a part of me each day, and I become a part of them. I hear their cries for equity and a chance to do better. However, I know that a school alone (and a school’s budget) can only do so much, which is why I’ve turned to this site. I want to give my students (and they want) better resources, such as books, furniture, and technology, and any donation will be appreciated.
My Project
Students should be able to find characters with whom they can identify; however, in school, students often feel stuck reading about characters with whom they do not connect and stories by long dead authors. I've implemented independent reading in my high school class because I want my kids to find a book they enjoy and know that read doesn't have to be a burden. Since incorporating this, I've found that students enjoy reading more (no, we can't win them all over, but I know I've reached some that may have otherwise never thought they could enjoy a book). My classroom library is large as it has come from my own personal collection and books I buy on my own, but I want it to grow. Having a classroom library and being able to recommend a book to a student without sending them to the library can create a positive relationship and send a powerful message.
