Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th graders are a tight knit community of chatty, hardworking young people from the lower east side of New York City. They come from a wide mix of cultural backgrounds and demonstrate a wide range of ability in regards to language and reading. They share a common passion for questioning and discussing social issues, and love reading and talking about good books. They are silly at times and love to goof around at the worst times, but they are always willing to get to work and apply lessons to improve their writing, critical thinking skills, and discuss ideas with their peers.
My Project
Students in my classroom like to read about superheroes and villains; they like action and fantasy books, or books that hold connections to issues that they see in their every day lives. According to my students, my classroom library doesn't have a large collection of interesting books, so I would like to have books will hold their interests and keep them reading.
YA novels deal with issues of social inequality, identity, and sexuality; they help young people form their own ideas about their world and build their identity.
However, most of the novels that are published represent these issues from a white perspective. According to the Collaborative Children's Book Center, less than 10% of the 3,700 they reviewed in 2017 were written by or were about the Latin experience. As young people growing up in challenging circumstances, it's important for my students to be able to see themselves represented in the texts that we read.
As we move into the new year, many of my students have shared goals of improving their reading. To better support them, I would like to provide books for my students that allow them to see themselves in the stories that they read and that will hold their interest.
