Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine having a helicopter adult within two feet of your body 24 hours a day? I'd be miserable! Kindergarten, first, and second grade students impacted by mental illness and developmental delays need time to work independently. These materials will create a structure for independence!

We are kindergarten, first, and second grade students impacted by mental illness, speech-language impairments, and developmental delays.

Additionally, we are exposed to multiple languages as we live at or below the poverty line. As a Title I school we work to fill the achievement gap despite the multitude of risk factors our students face. Students enter our classroom with a variety of behavioral and emotional concerns that must be supported prior to engaging in learning. All of our students achieve at least one year of growth in reading and math--most achieve 1.5-2 years of growth. Student success can be seen in behavioral regulation, academic achievement, and social relationships.

My Project

Students within our program are achieving at or above expectations with environmental structure and effective instructional practices. As a result more students are being placed within our program. My current students now can work independently, but we lack the structures to provide them clear spaces to work independently. The large body bean bags will give students clear space in which to read and maintain their body position. The listening center mats contain a clear divider with the wooden listening station that will allow two students to engage in listening to fluent reading at the same time. Without these pieces of furniture, students will not be able to engage in as many independent tasks within the classroom.

My students need the opportunity to work independently if they are going to have any chance to participate in independent living tasks and competitive employment as adults.

Children need opportunities to gain independent work skills at a young age in order to gain self-reliance and self-efficacy that can be utilized to advocate for their needs at an older age. These pieces of furniture will adequately support my students' need for structure and clear environmental expectations.
