I am so excited to be joining my school as a 3rd-grade math & science teacher. As I enter my 2nd year in Baltimore City Public Schools, I am much better equipped with an understanding of my students and what they need in order to be successful inside and outside of the classroom. My students are frequently pitted against a system that does not give them the tools necessary to reach their full potential and unlock the superpowers that make them the smart, unique, and incredibly special young people they are.
As someone who believes passionately in education as a means of activism and advocacy, I firmly believe that the right tools can make or break a student's success.
My students deserve and need a space that supports their development as they are discovering what their passions and skills are. They are brilliant, curious, and resilient, and are understanding how to be critical thinkers in a world that is often confusing and difficult. I firmly believe in their ability to change the world and hope you will too.
I am so excited to bring technology to some of the most brilliant, curious minds this coming year. Having taught kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in the past, I have seen how critically necessary technology is to the success of students in developing an understanding of the material at an individualized level. Fire tablets allow students to access this material, as they will allow my classroom to use tech as a fundamental component of students' learning on a day-to-day basis.
Technology is the bridge between where we are and where we're going.
With your help, my students will be able to get support for their current level of understanding with tutoring applications specific to their learning level such as Zearn and iReady. They will also be able to work in teams on such group applications as Kahoot and learn the value of teamwork as they work together. The magnetic cords will allow students for years to come to also use these tablets since they will allow for easy charging and therefore make it less likely for mishaps when the tablets are being plugged in by little hands.
The chart paper & markers allow my students to visualize what I am talking about in a more permanent way. Those of you who know me personally, know that I studied art. I love to bring this 'secret skill' of mine into the classroom! Students are able to see my and their words and pictures as visual representations that will become permanent fixtures over the course of the year. Students learn in multitudinous ways, and providing visual representation is just one way I can ensure that they are able to refer back to previously-learned information while in my room. Finally, a diffuser allows calming and cleaning aromas to fill our room.
