My students need classroom materials such as puzzles, games and beads that they can do independently to learn and reinforce this much needed skill.

My Students
Do you remember they feeling of success, satisfaction and independence when you were first able to do something on your own? Whether it was tying your shoes, buttoning your shirt, completing a puzzle or making a bracelet? My students need these resources to master basic skills independently.
I work in a NYC DOE District 75 school, meaning all of the students are severely disabled, either physically or intellectually.
It is a high school/occupational training center which is solely geared toward post graduation (21 years old). All of my students are classified as having autism, some more severe than others. But I see potential in every one of them. They have their own personalities and idiosyncrasies as any other human being. I do my best to bring out the best in each one.
My Project
I am requesting items such as puzzles, games and beads for my students to increase their level of independence. On the surface, it might just look like fun and games but my students are not at a cognitive level where they can learn academics. They are learning to attend to tasks at increased times of duration and doing these tasks independently. These skills will serve them well when they will begin a work site program when they are 16. This program is designed around completing simple tasks-stocking shelves and packaging items. My students need a level of independence and to be able to attend for prolonged periods of time. These resources will help them immensely.
I want to thank Kia Motors America for helping teachers by funding projects so instrumental in the development of students with special needs. Unfortunately, their futures are limited by their disabilities, but by reinforcing skills teachers, with the help of donations from companies like Kia Motors we will help bridge the gap.
Kia Motors America has given teachers the chance to make the lives of our students better.
Their generosity helps teachers create opportunities children might never have by donating funds to supply classrooms with much needed resources.
My students will be able to work independently- their ultimate goal- with a wide variety of material. I look forward to my student's progress in attending and know this will create more choices for them after they graduate. Thank you Kia Motors America.
