Independence Is Our Goal

My students need the mail sorter, headphones and calculators to be more independent in the classroom as they move closer towards adulthood.

My Students

Our students attend a large urban high school with 2,700 students. They come from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. My class is a special needs life skills classroom with a variety of learning and sensory needs. Our students participate in school and work activities to prepare them for adulthood.

As they work towards independence they display a positive, can do attitude unmatched by anyone I know.

They make me proud and they make me smile on a daily basis. They are so excited to learn how to be more independent. Some of them go off to work each day for a part of their school day and they always go off smiling and supporting each other. We are a team!

My Project

My students are working towards independence. The mail center will allow my students to independently access their individually designed classroom materials for the day without requiring adult assistance. They will also feel a greater sense of belonging by being given their own personal space. Even though it's a small space that will make all the difference to them.

They will use the calculators and dry erase markers to complete real world math problems.

My students will use them to compute real world math problems and will probably need them throughout their adulthood. The headphones will allow them to access the computer without disturbing their classmates.
