Independence In Self-Care

My Project

One important element to a classroom community is that every student will get their needs met, whether academic or otherwise. I know my first graders want to be "taken care of", but at the same time they want to treated like they are "old enough to take care of themselves". If I can provide a self-care station in the classroom, the students can learn that they will be taken care of when we are together.

This project allows the students access to some basic supplies that give the children independence to "take care of" their physical needs.

Tissues, hand sanitizer, band-aids, water cups and wipes are items that are used regularly in my 1st grade classroom. When these items are available for students to access as needed, they learn responsibility in taking care of themselves. The added benefit to having these supplies easily available for students, is that they will learn to take care of their needs, and then get right back to learning. If they need a band-aid, they get one and come back to math. Then I can also focus on giving them attention based on academic needs and success.
