Independence and Growth

My students need mailboxes to put their everyday papers in . I have tried several other options and they are not working. This helps the children build independence as well as have their own space.

My Students

My students are African American and Hispanic. They come from very low income families. Many of my children have not been exposed to many opportunities "extra" activities, such as, The Children's Museum, Zoo... Things many children take for granted. Many of these children are dealing with traumatic experiences that affect their emotional well being.

They are enthusiastic and inquisitive.

We just do not have a lot of resources for these busy little ones. We could use lots of enrichment activities and resources.

My Project

As a Pre K classroom we are trying to prepare these children for Kindergarten as well as life. We work hard to teach independence. One of the best ways is to teach children to care for their own things. The mailboxes will help to give them this independence and responsibility.

The flannel stories help to build literacy skills and retell of a story.

All of which helps build language and pre reading skills.

The tornado tube helps to teach children about weather. They are able to see how a tornado is formed. As well as what one actually looks like in a controlled situation.
