Incubating Success: One Bacteria Colony at a Time

Help me give my students an incubator for growing bacteria in STEAM labs and flashlights with batteries to find evidence of bacterial colony growth.

My Project

This year I am teaching AP Biology for the first time. As a result, I have many specific needs related to the labs and activities necessary for AP Biology success. This new to me course is designed to both introduce students to college level biology content and prepare them for the depth and breadth of curriculum at the college level. Aside from understanding the content, students need many opportunities for hands-on activities. This allows them to build a personal relationship with the content and enhance their learning.

Having an incubator in our science lab is critical for success in AP Biology; students can experiment with cell growth, gene expression as well as population genetics.

These experiences will be invaluable to students as they continue on in their STEAM careers. In this project, the incubator is the critical piece of equipment as growing bacteria effectively requires the ability to control for factors like location, temperature and humidity. The flashlights will enable students to see evidence of bacteria with modified genomes as different proteins will be expressed. Together, these materials give students a chance to see DNA, genes and genetic engineering in action.
