Incredible Mosaic Tile Art Projects for All in the Makerspace

My Project
The library includes the Next-Level Makerspace. This space offers all students, regardless of race, religion, socio-economic status, gender, or sexual orientation the opportunity to engage in the welcoming, supportive, creative space.
Student engagement in school is a very important role of the Makerspace.
The new national hidden educational crisis in schools is chronic student absenteeism. According to the Oregon Department of Education, the Hillsboro School District is one of the worst hit, having 35.4% chronic absenteeism (missing >=10% of the school year). Research reports 40% of students feel less connected to school following the Covid-19 pandemic. Students are less likely to skip class if they feel connected to their peers and feel welcome in school. Additionally, anxiety was the most common reason students cited for why they had missed school in the past year.
One way to encourage students struggling with attendance due to anxiety is to have them experience the Makerspace. When students discovery the creative space they become engaged, gain a sense of belonging, and it can become a reason they come to school.
The objective of this grant is to stock our Makerspace with high-quality, student-selected, easy to use Mosaic Tile craft supplies that students can use during advisory and lunch to freely create projects they can take with them, and be proud to display and gift.
This space is an oasis in the desert of middle school for many of our students.
The students want me to pass along their desire to keep the Makerspace fully stocked with amazing craft supplies to make sure next year’s students continue to have the opportunity to let down their guard, take a deep breath, and immerse themselves in the world of crafting.
