As a neurodivergent educator, it is especially important to me that I help to foster a school environment that embraces and empowers all students. If our school is able to build a larger sensory library that includes items like compression tunnels, sensory sacks, balance boards, swings, and alternate types of seating, all students will benefit.
These items will provide increased opportunities for individualized sensory supports, helping educators to teach students about how meeting their physiological needs improves their emotional regulation and ability to learn, which improves the school environment for everyone.
Because every child and every situation is unique, we can’t rely on the same limited options for sensory regulation. By having more sensory options, I will work with my team to further individualize our support and guidance as we teach our students ways to regulate their bodies and meet their unique sensory and learning needs.
When our students are better able to have their sensory needs met, everyone ends up happier. The benefits of meeting sensory needs are endless. People who have their sensory needs met are better able to regulate their emotions and behavior, leading to improved focus and attention. Meeting sensory needs also reduces stress and anxiety, creating a more conducive learning environment. Additionally, it enhances sensory processing skills, promoting better coordination, balance, and body awareness. Overall, when sensory needs are addressed, each individual is able to feel more comfortable, engaged, and ready to learn, ultimately fostering their academic and social development. By having a larger sensory toolbox to work from, we will further create a supportive environment where all students and teachers can thrive. It is my hope that this project helps to further develop a supportive and empowering school environment for neurodivergent students and everyone involved.
