Increasing Physical Activity in PE Through the Use of Technology
My students need the “Educaching Garmin Curriculum”. This comes with 10 compasses, "caches" to place throughout campus for students to find, and a curriculum of lesson plans that meet California State Physical Education Standards.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a multitude of backgrounds. I have students whose families have migrated to this area due to the rich agriculture and farming opportunities. I have families that have been here their entire lives as well, and are proud to be a bearcat! I have students that never "want" for anything and in the same class, students that feel grateful when I loan them a pencil or paper.
Most importantly, I have students that want to be active and present in my class each day.
Our students enjoy pushing their personal physical limits through activities such as cross-fit, insanity, yoga, step-aerobics, and a variety of other fitness lessons.
My Project
Our school site has a one to one ratio for students with their chromebooks. This works fantastically in every other core subject; except for physical education. We weren't awarded any technology in our department and our budget was cut nearly in half this school year. This grant could give PE more technology options in our lessons.
Additionally, our students need more options to stay active and healthy outside of the school day.
By incorporating Geocaching through the "Educaching" curriculum, we could potentially give students a new lifetime fitness hobby to perform with their friends and families on the weekends and outside of the physical education class. Geocaching also teaches the students important life skills, such as using a compass and being able to read coordinates.
Bringing Geocachng into our school would bring our students into the 21st century by learning skills that will provide students with a lifetime ability to use a compass.
