I teach in a school district with students from various backgrounds, including low income, special needs and English language learners, many of which receive free lunches and are faced with various challenges in school and in the communities they live in. Despite these challenges, my students come to school every day, on time, and ready to learn.
My students bring a lot of energy and excitement to school, along with the strong desire to learn to read, write, and speak better.
They love to learn through various modalities such as music, movement, technology, and art. When we use music videos to learn our sight words, or skills needed to blend words, I see their eyes light up. They are fully engaged and motivated in learning. I need to utilize various tools and methods that will continue to put that sparkle in their eyes to help my students to be successful and become lifelong learners.
My Project
Using oral language is something that many of us may take for granted. But if you are a child who's learning English while learning other subjects, it can be quite challenging. My students will use the 5 tablets to create digital stories that comprise words, photos, video, and music by using various apps such as "Smilebox", "Storybird", and the tablet's camera to record videos.
Storytelling is a great way to develop students' oral language skills as they are presenting their stories orally and visually.
My students will engage in interactive read alouds with the 10 books that have a theme of immigration, which will provide students with vocabulary, and models of fluent, expressive reading. The books will also serve to provide examples of other children who may have immigrated and they can relate to them. The document camera will make the pictures and models of writing accessible for viewing to the class. Having these tools in my class will empower my students in using their voices. My students will be inspired and encouraged to engage in conversations and academic discussions.
