Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Creative, hard-working, motivated, curious, and future innovators - these are words and phrases that I would use to describe my middle school students. As an educator at a low income, mainly minority, urban school, my students demonstrate perseverance by overcoming the obstacles they are faced with everyday, which, as a young adolescent, is never easy.

I believe in the importance of a caring classroom environment where authentic learning is supported and encouraged.

My goal as a teacher is to be able to reach my students by using different teaching strategies so that each student can learn the skills necessary to be successful, both in and out of the classroom. Teaching math gives me an opportunity to teach real-life problem solving skills and the ability to see those "a-ha" moments when my students understand and relate a core concept.

My Project

The first step towards success in math is a positive attitude. Many of my students enter math class with feelings that make them unhappy about having to do math. Math negativity creates low self-expectations and a fear of making mistakes. The purpose of this project is to help build student interest in math by creating a classroom library that humanizes the mathematicians who developed the content students learn.

We teach students to memorize equations, formulas, and theorems, but we don't share the stories about the people who developed and explored them.

I want to spark curiously in my students by sharing stories of the people who explored how numbers work and how their explorations of patterns allowed them to create the concepts they learn in school. I want to capture my students' imaginations as a way to demonstrate the value of math.
