I teach middle level students who are learning English as a new language. The majority come from the Philippines and the island nations of Micronesia. They need language support to be successful in their regular classes, as well as navigating their new environment.
I believe that language learners learn best through peer collaboration with hands-on, visual learning opportunities.
I aim to provide students a lot of opportunities to interact with the core content they are learning. I also strongly believe in arts-integration as a powerful tool for learning.
My Project
I am so lucky to be able to partner with a local gardening organization to bring hands-on gardening lessons to my students. We did these lessons last year and read the book Seedfolks, which was great. The culminating project including my students donating the plants they grew for a community plant distribution. I loved that my students learned about plants, tied to literature, and included a community service aspect.
This DonorsChoose.org project will supplement those lessons by providing watering cans and gardening gloves for my students, as well as quality literature, both picture books and novels, for students to make connections between what they are learning in gardening and building literacy skills.
I am excited to get to do the gardening lessons again and will need new literature to pair with the project. Thank you for your consideration!
