My Project
At SITHS, I challenge students to think outside their comfort zone and try to walk in others' shoes. In my AP environmental and honors biology classes, we do this by comparing our personal, communal and national environmental impact to others, examining those consequences, and examining solutions on different levels.
Rather than hear me share facts and information, I'd like for my students to examine environmental science in a flavor that suits them best: this environmental action library would give students different avenues to explore and enhance their understanding of the world around them.
As students focus on a specific environmental topics within these books, they can share their new understandings with classmates and illicit healthy dialogues and discussions about the world around them as more versed global citizens.
Students at SITHS are exceptionally talented and enjoy taking their learning to new levels through mediums other than chalk and talk. I think many of them would have a much deeper insight on environmental action and justice through these texts as many have not ventured out of the five boroughs. I hope these narratives, stories, and facts will ignite them, encouraging them to make local and larger changes, all the while teaching them grassroots and the importance of science.
