My students have the head and heart to make it through most any obstacle they face. Not only are they middle schoolers, dealing with friendships and family challenges, but our students are part of a priority school, where virtually all of them the receive free and reduced lunch, many of them living in poverty, dealing with all of the challenges related to it.
As a teacher of AVID classes, I teach my students strategies to not only enhance their learning, but also to enhance their way of thinking and way of life.
I hope that what I emphasize to them during the school day can transfer over to how they deal with challenges they will face outside of the school. If they can do this successfully, I hope that it can make their lives productive and happier.
My Project
Our AVID and College for Every Student (CFES) Brilliant Pathways programs are always trying to increase our middle school students' interest in college. For the past several years I have had students research various colleges, including smaller, specialized, and local colleges (rather than just the larger more famous ones).
For this project student will create banners and pennants featuring colleges and place them in every classroom in our school.
We do this for our college week as well as one more time during the year. Both students and adults are very interested to see the types of pennants that are created, as well as the school information that is displayed along with each of the schools' logos. I definitely feel that this project is worthwhile for our students to do. The supplies in this proposal will be enough for our classes to do them 4 times over the next 2 years, allowing hundreds of students and teachers to see, appreciate, and learn from the final products.
Some of the items that I am requesting in this project are difficult for us to find locally such as the specialized paper and felt. In previous years we had to make our pennants and banners with inferior materials because we ran out of supplies. Going through DonorsChoose could really help to make this project go the way that it was intended to. The fadeless paper is the correct size and thickness for this project and I can't find this brand locally. The felt is also the correct thickness that I need. I've requested glue and a glue gun to put everything together. Finally, the markers and pencils are necessary to create our colorful banners.
