I have a special needs classroom with 9 students with varying disabilities including physical, mental, behavioral, and intellectual. They are grades K-6, all in one classroom, and have individual needs and goals. Each student has a different ability level and is on a different grade level academically. They really need support to reach their goals with materials and programs. I have two students who are in a wheelchair. I have two students that need assistance moving and walking. A lot of them need one-on-one support to complete work and need hand-over-hand assistance to trace or cut.
My Project
I asked for a portable washer/dryer combo for my classroom and a laminating machine with laminating pouch refills. The portable washer/dryer is needed to keep students clothes clean that otherwise would not get washed. I can include laundry as academic and daily living skills for my students to increase their independence. Students can sort laundry by color and practice this daily living skill using task analysis and social stories. Social stories are also useful for increasing literacy in our special needs children. We need individualized activities for every lesson. My non-verbal students communicate through picture cards. According to the communication Bill of Rights, non verbal learners should have the opportunity to make choices, refuse, and request objects,activities, etc. We laminate the picture cards and make these assistive materials to increase our students communication. Laminated pictures are needed, because regular paper gets torn and does not last.
