Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Increase kids self-esteem, build reading fluency, and open a door to the world of novels all at the same time!
I am an inclusive special education teacher at an inner city school. Our school has a large population of students who are bilingual and have a low socioeconomic status. I am currently working with 6th grade students.
Many of my sixth grade students with special needs are reading at a second or third grade reading level. I also have two students who are functionally non-readers. This means that they miss out on the joys of reading grade-level novels. Many of them suffer from a low self-esteem because of their reading difficulties.
Last year, I purchased books on tape and CD that students were able to check out and take home with them. They loved it. One of my students who had never read anything other than picture books actually tackled "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini and was able to give me an accurate oral summary! He was so proud of himself! I would like to provide more books for the students to tackle. I am asking you to help me purchase 10 audiobooks on playaways. Books on playaways will allow students who don't have access to a tape or CD player at home to listen to a novel read aloud while following along in the written text. The titles I am requesting include: "Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian", "Al Capone Does My Shirts", "Absolutely Normal Chaos", "Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "Among the Hidden", "An American Plague", "Blackwater", "Animal Farm", "Don't Look Behind You", and "Fairy Tale Detectives". I am attempting to build a library that will appeal to boys as well as girls and represent authors and characters from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. After students read these books, I will work with them to create alternative book reports.
I am willing to buy the written versions of these books myself, but I need help to finance the audio versions.
By contributing, you will be empowering my students by giving them access to grade-level books that will allow them to think of reading as a fun learning experience rather than an uphill battle. Thank you so much for considering this project. You are really making a difference and helping children to meet high academic expectations despite their special challenges.
