This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Reading give us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are" - I try to instill in my students that the more that we read, the more they will be able to experience and understand. I want them to understand that when we open a book we are transported to another place and time.

My 7th grade scholars attend one of the biggest elementary schools in Chicago, where 99% of them come from low income families and require assistance to get the basic needs and supplies for school.

My students are mostly English Language Learners and struggle with reading and writing in English. I hope that through the novels and texts we read together, I can inspire them to conquer their insecurities and prepare them for a successful future.

My Project

My students will be using the novel "A Long Walk to Water" to learn and gain a better understanding of other countries and the struggles that those countries may be facing due to poverty, war and lack of resources and water. In this project -based unit about survival and cultural awareness students will develop action plans to help other countries or even our own states and cities in need of aid or resources.

This unit will help students understand that the world and the issues at hand are much bigger then just where we live.

It will help my students learn to become activists and become more knowledgeable about the impact they can make by coming together and helping one another.
