My students need the reading and writing materials, magnifiers, comprehension folders, and nonfiction reading comprehension cards to help increase their critical thinking while reading and writing. They need the math and science items to also increase their thinking skills.
Imagine your childhood spent indoors every weekend because your family doesn't have enough money to go out. Imagine your world consisting of sitting in front of a TV every evening. Imagine that your only access to critical thinking is when you go to school. How would you be prepared for life?
Our students live in a rural area in Florida with a low socioeconomic status.
Most of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My class also consists of students with disabilities including autism and reading and math disabilities. Students who live in poverty do not have as many life experiences as students living in higher classes therefore, it is necessary for me to provide much more explicit, hands-on instruction to them in class. Students with disabilities also require me to provide the same explicit, hands-on instruction to develop their critical thinking skills. In fact all students benefit from explicit, hands-on instruction to help develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
My Project
The materials I'm requesting will help my students gain critical thinking skills while working in all academic areas. The science tools will aid in hands-on investigations, which will engage my students and help them think critically and problem solve. I've requested some materials to aid my students in creating research projects. This will help my students learn how to conduct research and again help with critical thinking. I would like to add some math material that align with our new Common Core Standards. These standards are designed with critical thinking and problem solving in mind. The reading and Language materials I've requested center around non-fiction reading. Non-fiction reading is a skill that is used throughout life. Students need to know how to think critically as they read non-fiction materials. These materials will help my students develop their critical thinking skills as well as their problem solving skills.
Research has shown that more than 60% of our students will have a job in the future that has not yet been created.
How as educators can we prepare our students for such jobs? The answer is simple. It is imperative that we teach them to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. These are life skills that our students will need in order to provide for their families in the future and to become contributing members of society. Please help me to help my students develop these skills.
