This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As second language learners, my students are not your typical readers that pick up a book and read for pleasure. They need resources that will foster a love for reading and help them improve their critical reading skills. They already work hard to improve their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills on a daily basis to pass their English language proficiency test. They need additional resources to target their low reading skills. An essential part of their success as readers then is finding books that are of high interest.
My Project
As a teacher of English language learners, it is important for me to expose my students to text that will help them grow as human beings and foster compassion for others as well as target their reading skills. Through the use of a high-interest novel, I see my students more engaged and willing to participate in critical reading activities. Having these novels in the class will allow us to work in stations analyzing certain passages from the novel, character actions, and plot events. Having this opportunity will help them improve the skills they need to tackle high school leveled texts.
