Increasing Biology and Anatomy Efficacy for Emergent Bilingual High Schoolers

Help me give my students the ability to get hands-on experience learning core concepts in Biology and Anatomy through effective models, visuals, and tools to help them be successful. These items will also help improve ESL instruction.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

N. High School is a Title 1, Urban, Emergent Bilingual school in the heart of Austin, Texas. Most students at our school do not speak English as a first language and many are newcomers to the United States from a variety of countries primarily in Latin America and the Middle East. Our students are often spending time supporting their families and familial obligations by working before and/or after school to provide financial security. Due to this, many students do not have the financial resources to provide the materials requested in this list for themselves. These items will increase access to developmentally appropriate students who are emergent bilingual, special education classified, and those who need scaffolded supports to be successful.

The models requested will provide students hands-on opportunities to see the often microscopic concepts we discuss in class.

It will also help them build their English language skills around these topics as well as to learn the concepts in their home language. Many of my neurodivergent and SPED students benefit from hands on learning opportunities.

The supplies in this order will provide access to daily necessities that students may not be able to afford themselves so that everyone in the classroom has the same access to materials.

The visual posters will provide opportunities for visual learners to place vocabulary in English and their home language with appropriate science concepts. The calculator set will provide students with the tool to elevate their STEM - specifically scientific mathematics- skills. This will especially help students without the means to afford their own calculator.

The reference materials around science teaching and ESL learning will specifically help me continue to increase my learning and teaching strategies to help my emergent bilingual students and to continue modernizing science and STEM instruction for my students.
