Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 1st grade students in my classroom are unique, creative, and full of energy. They work hard every day! My classroom is at the center of a wonderfully diverse school community. The students in my class come from a wide variety of racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds and bring an amazing amount of knowledge of different languages to our school. Many of my students are English learners. I also teach students with identified special needs. I teach in a Title I school where the majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students have also experienced trauma at a young age.

I strive to provide an environment where all students can feel connected to our classroom community and engage in high levels of learning.

My students come to school with a many different experiences and needs. I believe that every student can and will achieve high levels of growth and that it is my job to provide the appropriate supports specific to each child.

My Project

Over time as teacher, I have shifted away from traditional desk groupings and moved toward a flexible seating model. All I can say is WOW! My students love having options for where to sit and work throughout the day. It has increased student engagement, provided more student buy-in, and helped to build students' independence as they learn to make smart choices about where they choose to work in the classroom so they can maximize their learning. A floor table will give my students another seating option they crave to build on this work in my classroom community. Wobble seats will give my students a fun option for small group work that will allow them to move and still stay focused on learning.

Flexible seating helps my students learn to independently solve problems and make good choices for themselves, something that will support them outside of the classroom as they become citizens of a fast-paced world with endless options.

A new floor table and wobble stools will not only give them different places to work but it will also promote higher-order thinking skills as they learn to think not only about what assignments they need to complete but how they want to complete that work.

These flexible seating options will also promote students' physical health giving students more chances to to move around the class and change positions as they work. It will also provide students with an opportunity to collaborate with their peers as they can easily partner up or work with a small group - something they would not be able to do as easily at a traditional single desk. Please consider helping my students increase their agency, build collaborative skills, and have chances to move as they learn through this flexible seating project!
