Help me give my students increased focus during group time this year. Providing wobble cushions during group time helps preschools focus on their learning better by allowing them to wiggle in an acceptable way.
My students at our Headstart are from South Minneapolis, MN, and between the ages of 3 and 5. Students often enter our program for only a year or two before they move on to Kindergarten, and our classroom community helps them develop the early learning skills in math and literacy that help them be successful learners.
My students are learning how to interact with others and developing their ideas of fairness and empathy; knowing how to talk to others to get your needs met is a skill that will help them as they grow.
We work hard to talk about our feelings and to use words to communicate needs to others, as well as how to take turns and be fair to others. This social development is a tremendously important part of the preschool years, and it helps them grow into adults who will help the world be a better place.
Many of my children live in large apartment buildings with limited green space. One of my goals is to expose them more to the natural world both through field trips, as well as by bringing the nature into the classroom.
My Project
This project is part of my overall goal of providing my preschoolers with more opportunities for success in the coming school year. I want expectations of how to learn in my classroom to include strategies that foster success.
Wobble cushions create a small degree of instability when a child sits, creating a secondary focus of engaging core muscles, which cuts back on distractions while they learn.
Handheld fidgets also provide this secondary focus. Allowing preschoolers to move their bodies while they listen increases their focus and comprehension. This year I want to implement strategies to help preschoolers focus, and the string balls will also provide a hand held fidget for children to use while they learn.
