Last month my students were learning about how various animals take care of their young. I wanted to show them a brief video clip on alligators to supplement the lesson.
Since my classroom lacks the technological bells and whistles of a 21st Century classroom, showing this video clip was pretty difficult.
I needed to break my 27 students up into groups of 3 or 4. They took turns crowding around my cell phone to watch the clip while listening to the accompanying audio through headphones. That's right! In order to show a 2-minute video to my entire class, I needed to have seven rotations of students crowd around a tiny cell phone screen. I'm a second grade special education teacher in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school, and approximately 95% of its students receive free lunch. My 27 second graders are digital natives. They are growing up in a time where iPods, cell phones, digital cameras, and home computers have become a part of everyday life. Unfortunately many of my students have very little access to technology outside of school and even less access to technology in school.
I am requesting an iPad 3 with a protective case to use in my classroom with my students. I will upload various educational applications onto the iPad so my students can build their reading fluency and develop their math skills. I will also hook the iPad up to an existing projector so that video clips can be shown to the entire class at the same time. I am also requesting a smart cover to keep our iPad 3 safe.
As a special education teacher, I strive to incorporate technology into my classroom as often as possible.
The addition of an iPad 3 to my classroom would be a wonderful way to make this goal possible for my students, particularly those who are visual learners or motivated by technology.
