This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students in the Structured Learning Center participate in 2 Occupational Therapy groups a month. These groups (grades K-5) aim to increase the student's bilateral fine motor skills, dexterity, hand strength and visual motor skills through tasks such as fun art projects where students use a variety of materials and tools to match the visual model. Unfortunately, a lot of the materials needed are not funded by the school district and are often bought out of pocket by the OT or teachers. Some of these students require specialized tools to increase their independence in participating. Students benefit from working with different textures/materials to increase sensory tolerance. Simple items such as stickers challenge the child to use both hands with precision to hold and peel off the backing. The students beam with pride and excitement when they finish their art projects and can't wait to take them home and share them with their parents. Please help these students increase their skill set and independence in the classroom.
