My Project
My students are exceptionally bright and compassionate. They are part of the gifted and talented program in our district, and are accepting of those who are different from them. Loving vs. Virginia, my requested novel, meets needs as my students have expressed access to nonfiction/historical books that educate them to real-life events while also expanding their knowledge of literary devices and approaches. This book is a beautifully crafted literary piece that expounds on the interracial relationship between Richard and Mildred Loving. It highlights the laws as they existed through the 50s and 60s that prevented this couple from living together as a married couple due to the differences in their race.
We will read this book as a class, and engage in critical thinking and important discussion surrounding the events that led to this court case (i.e.
segregation, Civil Rights Movement, etc.). My students will benefit from this book as they gain access to a historical event through beautifully written free verse poetry. They will no doubt gain appreciation for this landmark case that changed interracial marriage laws in our country.
