Incorporating Financial Literacy Texts in the ELA Classroom (and Monopoly!)

My students need copies of Rich Dad, Poor Dad for Teens... and the game Monopoly to help learn about financial literacy.

My Students

My students are bright-eyed and full of energy each day they walk through the doors of my classroom. Success for my students means making improvement, and they are improving each and every day.

Approximately 65% of the students in my school receive free or reduced price lunch.

Despite having to face the burdens of poverty, my students enjoy having high quality materials while at school, and my goal is to provide them with the best experience possible. We just need a little help to make that possible!

My Project

Some have argued that English language arts teachers do not incorporate enough non-fiction texts into their classrooms. They argue that by only focusing on works of fiction, teachers do a disservice to their students by not preparing them to analyze expository texts, which is a more applicable real-world skill that helps with college readiness.

I would like to bring non-fiction texts about financial literacy into my ELA curriculum in order to help prepare students for life beyond the classroom.

I am requesting a class set of Robert T. Kiyosaki's Wisdom from Rich Dad, Poor Dad for Teens: The Secrets About Money That You Didn't Learn in School!, and a few games of Monopoly. I would like to create a unit that helps students analyze the text features of expository texts while also helping them learn about a skill that will be immensely useful to them later in life.

I hope that you will consider donating to this project. My students and I would be extremely appreciative!
