Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a resilient group of young people. More than 50% of our students are Black, Latinx, and/or Indigenous. Our school resides in a beautiful community where people from all walks of life collide. They are strong advocates and facilitators of their learning. Together, we are cultivating an equitable learning environment where everyone is a teacher and everyone is a learner.
Every day, we are one step closer!
My Project
As a culturally responsive educator, I am very passionate about incorporating literature in the classroom that students can resonate with. That is books that contain themes, traditions, languages, and cultures that align with that of their own communities. This school year the students will be reading "Summer of the Mariposas" by Guadalupe Garcia McCall. This story follows the world of magical realism, sisterhood, and maternal love.
This project will allow for every student to receive a copy of their own to take home and explore.
I believe that books have a bigger impact on our lives when we can call them our own. With these books, we will build on our understanding of literature, theme, and the power of the written word.
