This year, my students have worked on a variety of projects that require crafts and artistic tools. The community that I teach for has an extreme amount of poverty, and the families and school have been been hit particularly hard after Covid 19. As a result, I have paid for the majority of the supplies to create these projects. The most important project that we worked on was the science fair, which was by far their favorite assignment this year. This project required critical thinking, experimenting with the scientific process, and displaying boards neatly and colorfully for the entire community to see.
My most ambitious project next year will be a 4h grade play.
Students will need supplies to make sets and costumes for the play so that it can be completed successfully. My classroom hosts a wide range of abilities, including students who are quite advanced to students who struggle daily and require a great amount of individualized help. At this point in time, at least 50% of my classroom is comprised of students with special needs. This play will provide them with an opportunity to master their parts in the performance, create unique and attractive sets, and use teamwork towards a common goal.
Other assignments include making "Wanted" posters, trading cards, and yearbook entries as culminating projects for novels including "Crash", by Jerry Spinelli, "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing", by Judy Blume, and "Walk Two Moons," by Sharon Creech. We used each of these artistic assignments to explore characterization and theme.
I believe that all students have the ability to achieve success although each child learns in a different way. Artistic opportunities meet the needs of all students, both struggling and advanced, and they also enhance a sense of joy, critical thinking, and engagement year round.
