Help me give my students an inclusive classroom, from the minute they cross the threshold to my room, to the books on the shelves, to the posters on the walls.

My Students
I am spending my second year teaching online with 45 of the most creative, talkative, and energetic third grade kiddos I have ever met. My kiddos are almost entirely from East Africa, and either their parents or the kids themselves are immigrants.
Many of my students are SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education), and most are English Language Learners.
These kids are full of questions, and I love working hard to answer them each day.
Every day, I have a moment, or several, that remind me exactly why I chose to become a teacher. My kids are worth every late night, early morning, and the extra little gift I can find them.
These students have opened my heart to what I can do for them and the joy I share with them every time they succeed. Recently, we learned about text structures and text features. Nothing has made my heart happier than when my students come to me, eyes wide and excited when the book they chose from the class library had one of the features we have learned.
My students deserve the best, and that is what I want to give them!
My Project
Classroom environment can rely on so many little things but it starts with the space. Especially at the pivotal age of my students, we have a need to belong, to fit in, more than anything. Then the school subject learning can really start. Until the classroom feels like an inclusive community, I cannot do my job and neither can my students. In a school with students who are frequently forgotten, ignored, or given last choice, I want to give them a home, where no voice is too small. No student is unwelcome. No student feels like they aren't loved and included. I want to be the type of teacher who recognizes this and spends each day teaching the inclusivity we want to see in the world around our students.
A classroom that feels like a community is a classroom preparing a generation of world-changers.
And the small things really do make the biggest differences. My goal for my students with this is to learn about being an inclusive person and to grow in their social understandings. We talk a lot about being heroes in our world, and this is a key understanding to becoming someone who welcomes others. This lesson is one that so many in our world are working to learn, and I want to give my students a prime example of how to be part of an inclusive community. My favorite mentor teacher during student teaching modeled how to make a lesson out of anything, and my goal is to teach lessons on inclusivity to my students each day in every way.
