My Project
We have a dynamic community of students and families. Our K-8 charter is a little over 15 years old and was created by concerned parents, most of whom are refugees from Somalia, who wanted to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment where their children could thrive without discrimination.
Currently, all of my students are Black.
My goal is to provide an inclusive classroom community where my students’ culture is embraced and their Blackness is affirmed.
My students’ input is very important to me. I've requested a variety of materials at their request that will engage and motivate their learning (science materials, writing tools, chocolate for tests), provide a comfortable and welcoming space for our discussions on justice and racial equity (lights, air freshener, plants) encourage building and friendships with each other.
